Halloween Haunts

Halloween may be just around the corner, but when you live in Las Vegas, you don’t have to wait until October 31 to celebrate. The city has plenty of spooktacular events going on throughout the month for those wishing to get their scare on early. From fun family festivities to steamy adult-only soirees, here’s a look at five of Sin City’s most happening Halloween haunts.

Blood Village

Kicking off during Nevada Wild Fest Oct. 12-16 and continuing through Oct. 31, Blood Village promises victims, er, guests, a bloody good time in two haunted houses–The Haunted Mansion and 3-D Killer Klown Manor–as well as an above-ground graveyard. This horrifying attraction isn’t for the faint of heart. Only the bravest of souls will dare step aboard Last Ride, a terrifying journey inside a wooden coffin that lets guests experience what it’s like to be buried alive. Visitors during Nevada Wild Fest will save $5 off the price of admission to the haunted houses– just $10 for both (Last Ride costs $3 more). Talk about something to scream about! (200 S. Bonnie Screams

For those brave enough to find out if their cries for help can be heard all the way from Red Rock Canyon, Bonnie Screams returns to Bonnie Springs Ranch Oct. 13-16 and 20-31. Several strange events have been reported at the old ghost town, and it’s said that once the sun goes down, the darkened town is overtaken by meddling spirits. Be prepared to encounter clowns lurking in the darkness in the legendary Maze of Mayhem, search for the notorious Dr. Spinkle in the Wicked Wax Museum and risk it all in the Slaughter of the Swines before braving your way out along the Trail of Doom. Will you survive the night, or end up becoming the ghost town’s newest resident? (16395 Bonnie Springs Rd.; www.bonniescreams.net)

Fetish & Fantasy Ball

Named “One of the Top 10 Events in the World” by the Travel Channel, Las Vegas’ longest running Halloween party for adults returns for its 16th year when the Fetish & Fantasy Halloween Ball moves to the South Point Arena Oct. 29. More than 8,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event, which will feature performances from the dance project of the popular rock band Shiny Toy Guns to world-renowned DJs including Mix Master Mike from the Beastie Boys. Be sure to show up in your sexiest or most elaborate Halloween attire–you wouldn’t want to get a whipping for being bad now, would you? (9777 Las Vegas Blvd. So.; www.halloweenball.com)

Fright Dome

Once again, Fright Dome takes over The Adventuredome at Circus Circus every weekend in October. Promising even more thrills and chills, this year’s event features three new haunted houses, including two themed after the horror film Halloween. Guests can visit Michael Myers’ childhood home and go on a journey through the beginnings of his terror as well as tour the famed Haddonfield Memorial Hospital where Myers is being held in the psychiatric ward–or is he? More roaming scare actors than ever before virtually guarantee that there’s no place to run or hide. (2880 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; www.frightdome.com)

Haunted Harvest

Perfect for ghosts and goblins of all ages, the Springs Preserve will be hosting its 4th annual Haunted Harvest Oct. 14-16, 21-23 and 28-31. Featuring creepy characters, haunting Halloween décor and a festive scarecrow display, little ones can go trick-or-treating during the event while older guests visit the Harvest’s haunted house. Other fun activities include carnival games and live entertainment, so families can enjoy the spooky holiday together. (333 S. Valley View Blvd.; www.springspreserve.org)

The following is part of the article but separate, like a sidebar.

Freakish Phenomenon from the Great Beyond

Costumed ghouls and goblins can be frighteningly fantastic, but the real deal is what strikes true terror in the hearts of many a believer. Legends of ghosts abound in locations all over town; here are just a few.

Boulder Dam Hotel: Guests have reported hearing and seeing strange apparitions in the halls of this historic old hotel.

Boulder City Cemetery: It’s not an easy place to find, but legend has it that the apparition of a white cat will follow you through the cemetery…if it likes you.

Foxridge Park in Henderson: The ghost of a boy is seen on a swing after midnight. If you approach him, he turns into a demon, screams at you and disappears.

Bally’s Hotel: Built on the ashes of the 2nd largest hotel fire in U.S. history, that of the MGM Grand, which killed 84 people, ghosts should be expected here. Ghosts have been sighted on higher floors (19-24) and in the North Tower.

Redd Foxx’s Mansion: His home may have been seized by the IRS, but it seems evicting him is a much harder feat. Subsequent tenants have reported a back door that opens on its own, and employees of the current tenant, a realty company, report that computers turn on and off on their own and files disappear into thin air.

Certainly it would seem that what happens in Vegas really does stay in Vegas…even in the afterlife. Happy hunting!
